Save The World – Making a Difference in the Second Half of Your Life

Lesson one – Making a Difference in the Second Half of Your Life – September 2009

My teacher appeared as the two authors of a book I read this summer.

The book that changed my life:

Something to live for: Finding Your Way in the Second Half of Your Life

By Richard J Leider and David A Shapiro.

This book lays out a clear blueprint for making the second half of your life a rich and meaningful experience. It is the best book I’ve ever read on the subject of positive aging.

The message I got from this book is: The best way for me to live a more meaningful second half of life is to work toward making a positive difference in other’s lives – what the authors refer to as "save the world, one person at a time" – and to savor the process in doing so.

Although I consider myself a good person, the message for me is loud and clear – I am way behind in the helping others department.

My First Project

The first thing I’ve done to make a difference is to start working part time in a carpentry shop that builds cabinets for Habitat for Humanity. I am a carpenter’s helper and hoping to learn the skills needed to do more.

A second project

I’m in the early stages of looking for ways to help young children learn and get ready to go to school. Studies show that investing in this very early phase of childrens’ lives pays huge dividends later on in school and life. Unfortunately, this is also one of the most underfunded and underappreciated aspects of child development.

One program addressing this pressing problem is the "Grow up Great" program sponsored by PNC corp. (the bank) and the Sesame Street Workshop.

I am looking into this program to see where I can be of assistance. I will give you a progress report towards the end of October when I update this site.
