Sylvia Boorstein is a Zen Buddhist teacher and a very readable writer. I like the way she fills the book with personal examples about each aspect of the basic Buddhist philosophy. I find it much easier to grasp a concept when someone explains it with a personal experience.
The book explains Buddhist concepts in simple language with many practical suggestions for incorporating its teachings into daily living. Buddhism is not just a religion, but a philosophy of life.
One need not be a Buddhist to benefit from the wise advice in this book.
One Buddhist belief I am working on is: "Most of lifes struggles come from over-attachment to people, places, things and beliefs".
When I stop struggling with those attachments, it’s easier to accept life on life’s terms. Most of the time, things generally seem to go better than when I was trying to manage the universe. And, if they don’t, the alternative is usually not as bad as I feared.
There are many other practical and life enhancing principles in this book
Two examples are:
- The fundamental rule of right action: "Don’t cause pain"
- The fundamental principle of right mindfullness: "the aware balanced acceptance of present experience"
It’s Easier Than You Think is a book you can reread many times and always get something new from it. I hop you find it as helpful as I do.
