Lessons I Learned in Business

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."

Lesson two – All Great Ideas Degenerate Into Work – October 2009

Probably 80% of all great ideas never leave the "to do" list they were written on.

Why? – Because great ideas degenerate into work, and we already have too much "work" to do already. So, the great idea that everyone cheered for dies a slow death.

I’ve known many people who were reluctant to bring good ideas to their boss or co workers because they were afraid that they would get stuck doing the work. And they already had plenty to do.

Since I can’t change human nature, let me just point out some reasons why I work on great ideas. – We all have to work anyway, so why not work on a great idea rather than a mediocre one?
  • Great ideas are more fun than drab old "We’ve always done it that way" ideas and methods.
  • Great ideas have much higher rewards if they work out.
  • Great ideas are energizing. It’s thrilling to work on a big idea.
  • People who know how to implement great ideas (whether or not they originated them) are the ones who usually get ahead – either in an organization or as business owners.
  • No matter where I have worked, when I proved myself as an effective "idea" person, I got picked to work on more important projects which in turn made me more valuable and ultimately more employable.
So please, work on the great ideas – it will pay off big time!

Great Ideas and Personal Growth
WE often get great ideas about changes we want to make in our lives like quitting smoking, setting higher goals, or thinking more positively.

Remember, those great ideas will ALSO degenerate into work. In fact, it may be the hardest work you’ve ever done. FOR INSTANCE; how many of your new year’s resolutions did you keep for 6 months?

When it comes to great ideas about personal growth, keep your "to do" list very short, and plan to work very hard.
