Lessons I Learned in Business

"I don’t want to be just a voice on the phone. I have to get to know these guys face–to–face and develop a sincere relationship. That way, if we run into problems in a deal, it doesn’t get adversarial. We trust each other and have the confidence we can work things out."

Wayne Huizenga

Lesson one – Business (and most of life) is relationships – September 2009

Good relationships in business MATTER!

  • Suppliers – if you have a good relationship with a supplier, you usually get better service and delivery – especially when you need it the most. Sometimes you get a better price. Sometimes you are offered deals that others don’t get. Suppliers are people too, and they need to be thanked for all their help.

  • Customers – a good customer will generally overlook an occasional bad product or bad service and keep buying from you – especially if you fix the problem right away. A customer who feels you don’t care will leave you, and you may never know why.

  • Employees – you need to let employees know that you appreciate their work – even if you feel they make too much money, or you don’t like them. An employee with a bad attitude will undercut you every time.

Even if you don’t work in business, remember this:
  • We all have to get along with others, otherwise work can get pretty miserable

  • We all have goals to meet that usually depend on other’s cooperation

  • We all have others to please to keep the money coming in. Everybody has a boss, even the president of the organization.
